Sexuality

Gender and Sexuality are two very different things.  Thinking in a binary tends towards the heteronormative – that it is normal and proper for men and women form sexual partnerships.  Diverse sexuality are those which go beyond heteronormative thinking and includes predominantly homosexuality – that is women who form sexual relationships with women and men who likewise form sexual relationships with other men.  When the idea of same sex attraction exists, we can further expand the rainbow to include bisexuality, polysexuality and pansexuality.

Unfortunately for transgender people there tends to be a way of thinking that assumes a transgendered person is attracted to the opposite sex, or the same sex to which they were born, in a very heteronormative way.  An exaggeration of gendered feminine or masculine qualities leads to hyper-heterosexuality in order to validate their gender identity.  While it is true that many transsexual people form positive and lasting heterosexual relationships, a transgendered person, like any other has to come to terms with their own sexuality.

That means a transgendered person can be same sex attracted, opposite sex attracted, bisexual, polysexual, pansexual or asexual.  There are no rules, but there is a good chance that with the right support anyone included trans people can live healthy sexual lives, whether they be diverse, normal, or somewhere in between.
